An Australian skin cancer doctor accused of child pornography offences has been released from custody in Canada under strict conditions.

Dr Stephen Peter Menzies Murray, 57, has been behind bars on Canada’s Prince Edward Island since his arrest on October 3 after a member of the public reported what Canadian authorities described as “suspicious activity”.

Murray, the principal and director of a popular Rockhampton skin and laser centre, was charged with making, possessing and distributing child pornography and faces a maximum of 14 years’ jail on each count if found guilty.

During a court appearance on Prince Edward Island on Friday Murray agreed to post a $US10,000 ($A14,000) bond, wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and report to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police once a week.

“He is not allowed to use the internet except for work, communicating with legal counsel, family or establishing a residence on PEI (Prince Edward Island),” RCMP’s Sergeant Leanne Butler told AAP on Friday.

His electronic bracelet will alert authorities if he approaches the Charlottetown Airport, bridges or ferry terminals.

Authorities also have his passport.

The RCMP has reached out to Australian authorities and a joint investigation has been launched into Murray’s activities.

Murray, from Frenchville, Queensland, planned to visit Prince Edward Island for a few days before his arrest, authorities said.

His next scheduled court appearance is November 1.
