The Dallas Cowboys have signed Canadian offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley to the team’s 53-man roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s Week 18 game against the Washington Commanders.
It’s the fourth time this season Shepley will dress for a game with the Cowboys. He suited up in Week 8, 10 and 11, playing eight snaps against Minnesota in a 40-3 win over the Vikings. Being added to the active roster for the last game of the regular season means Dallas has signed him for next season.
The 28-year-old Shepley spent training camp with the Seattle Seahawks but was waived as part of final roster cuts, quickly being picked up by the Cowboys. He has spent the first seven weeks of the season on the practice squad but was called upon with Dallas battling depth issues along the interior.
Shepley originally joined the Seahawks in September of 2021 after he was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers. He suited up for eight games with the team but did not see any offensive snaps.
The University of British Columbia product made his NFL debut with the 49ers in 2020 after being called up from the practice squad in Week 14. He finished the season by dressing for the final three games with San Francisco.
Shepley was a first-round pick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2018 CFL Draft. He signed with the team in March 2019 following a stint with the New York Jets and started 14 games at right guard that season, winning the team’s Most Outstanding Rookie award.
The native of Windsor, Ont. opted out of his CFL contract in August 2020 to pursue the NFL, signing a one-year deal with the 49ers. His contract with the Riders has since expired, allowing him to sign with any team in the CFL should he ever choose to return north of the border.
Shepley performed well at the 2018 CFL Combine with 27 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, a 5.15 hand-timed 40-yard dash, 4.72 shuttle, 8.01 three-cone, 31-inch vertical, and eight-foot, 9.5-inch broad jump. His combination of size and athleticism drew the attention of NFL scouts.
He has earned over $1.2 million in his NFL career so far.
