From December 2022 to February 2023, in Tajikistan, 1,000 young people of military age completed military service as part of the mobilization draft reserve, paying money.
As Faridun Mahmadalizoda, spokesman for the country’s Ministry of Defense, told Asia-Plus, the total amount from alternative service amounted to almost 27 million somoni.
According to him, each conscript of the autumn draft in 2022 paid 26,880 somoni (420 indicators for calculations) in order to complete paid military service.
“Payment was made to the budget before the new year at the rate of one indicator for calculation, which last year was 64 somoni (since January 1, 2023, this indicator is set at 68 somoni). They served in the Lokhur and Tajmahal military training centers “the city of Dushanbe, at the training military base” Fahrobod “of the Khatlon region and the training base of the branch of the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense in the Sughd region,” Mahmadalizoda said.
Faridun Mahmadalizoda said that for some of the conscripts, the service was held from the end of December 2022 to January 18, 2023, for the other part – from January 20 to February 10.
“They completed military service and received military tickets,” Mahmadalizoda said.
The press secretary of the Ministry of Defense added that the amounts paid will be used for the construction of individual military units on the territory of the garrisons of the republic, the organization of the material and technical base, the construction of buildings and structures of military importance, their repair and maintenance, the payment of salaries to officers and teaching staff, administrative expenses, ensuring social protection of other servicemen, etc.
“Only in two cases the amount paid by the conscript can be returned: in case of unfitness for military service and death during paid service,” he recalled.
In the spring conscription last year, 1,200 young people of military age underwent paid service, paying a total of 32 million 256 thousand somoni.
In 2021, the parliament of Tajikistan in a new edition adopted the law “On military duty and military service”, according to which, henceforth, citizens of military age, having paid a certain amount and completed military service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the republic within a month. After long disputes and discussions, the government of the country has set the cost of paying for alternative service in the army in the amount of 420 indicators for calculations.
